Opinion: Frustration with lingering homelessness crisis evident in San Diego and across California [Opinion]
My 70-year-old wife, a retired social worker, and myself, a retired Washington state trooper, have lived in the East Village since 2015. We live in a nice high-rise condo across from Petco Park on Tenth Avenue. On a recent morning, my wife stepped outside and within minutes was attacked by a deranged street person who slapped her on the side of her head, then yanked a hoop earring out of her ear and continued down J Street ranting and raving.
Needless to say, this split-second attack was terrifying. This is the second time she has been attacked in broad daylight. Now Mayor Gloria has turned our Central Library into a daytime homeless shelter. The city is now considering hiring more armed security in response to increased drug use and suicides at the library. One glaring omission is how many of the 13 are new arrivals. A cited interviewee did admit that the local programs make the homeless lifestyle quite tolerable.
