California’s record-breaking wildfires and devastating floods demonstrate older generations need to step up, too
In late 2020, we woke to find the sky a horrifying orange color, an image of dystopian hellscape from a sci-fi movie. As homes, livelihoods and ecosystems went up in flames, powerful gusts swirled smoky remains throughout the Bay Area.
We have an opportunity to change course. Ignoring the issue of climate change does not make it disappear. We never imagined that we would spend our teenage years having to fight for a livable future, but the current environmental conditions of California have forced our generation to clean up this mess. Though scientists have been aware of climate change for decades, our predecessors have failed to take action. So now it’s up to us to step up.
Gen Z’s leadership in tackling the climate crisis has not gone unnoticed. Mobilization around climate change is a cycle: Engagement with climate concerns gets attention, which in turn drives further engagement.Youth Vs. Apocalypse Joining YVA means becoming part of a community centered around equity, justice and respect. By creating a dedicated community space for youth to demand the futures we deserve, we involve youth in climate activism beyond a passing interest.of our members pushing U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein to support the Green New Deal went viral, YVA students quickly organized press conferences and interviews, wrote opinion pieces and launched a website.
