Opinion: Building up the next generation of changemakers will make our communities stronger [Opinion]
Bachelor’s degree holders earn 84 percent more over a lifetime than those with only a high school diploma. This means that Reality Changers alumni bring more economic resources into their neighborhoods, helping to build stronger, more equitable communities.
For example, one Reality Changers graduate recently opened a second location for his popular restaurant. He’s hired multiple City Heights youth to work there, increasing economic opportunity in the neighborhood. Another graduate helped advocate for the Youth Opportunity Pass, which allows anyone under the age of 18 to ride San Diego County transit for free, increasing access to education and jobs for families without cars.
My hope for first-generation students is that you see yourselves as trailblazers, like Ritchey, because I certainly do. You are the first in your family to graduate from college, and, in the future, you may find yourself in an academic, professional or civic space where you are the only Black, Indigenous or person of color from a low-income family in the room. It takes great strength, confidence, resilience and grit to be first.
