How one Pokémon got four episodes banned.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT It's well known by fans of the Pokémon anime that there are a number of episodes which have been "banned" and are thus impossible to find officially. While there are a variety of reasons why episodes of the anime have been banned, the number one reason actually has to do with a particular Pokémon with a very controversial design: Jynx.
The Pokémon Jynx is one of the humanoid Pokémon from the first generation, resembling a woman with long blond hair wearing a dress. Jynx's original design gave it jet-black skin, and combined with its exaggerated facial features, Jynx accidentally came to resemble racial stereotypes of black people from the early 20th century.
Jynx Got More Episodes Banned Than Any Other Pokémon The first episode to star Jynx was known as "Holiday Hi-Jynx," and it actually did originally air in the US. However, public complaints about perceived racism led to the episode being pulled, and the English dub of it was never seen again in America.
Jynx did eventually return to the anime in purple-skinned form in a handful of other Hoenn-era episodes, some of which featured Jynx prominently, but Jynx would never have a significant appearance in the anime again after Hoenn. As with Porygon, which caught the blame for the seizure incident and that banned episode, it became apparent that Jynx's appearance, even after the change, was simply too controversial to include in the anime.
Ironically, footage of Jynx from these banned episodes remained a part of the Pokérap after each airing, meaning that 1 in every 5 episodes of the original series still featured a small cameo by Jynx. Jynx has at least had the good fortune to avoid being removed from the games, although it's unlikely it will ever appear in anime form again, outside of split-second cameos.
