One of Oakland's oldest mansions has 17 strangers living in it

The historic Ellen Kenna House has been an asylum, a set for a Netflix documentary, a Pottery Barn catalog shoot, and even a Jockey commercial — and it's now a home for strangers-turned-roommates.

The short-term leases and relatively affordable rent make the co-living arrangement particularly sought-after for people who have recently moved to the area or are just passing through. And, with its grand architecture, massive art collection, and vast gardens filled with rare plants, there are few places like it.
