Dragon Ball Super has made fans question if Dragon Ball GT is still canon, but it really shouldn't have as one character in Super proves GT is canon.

Since the start of Dragon Ball Super, fans have questioned if the original Dragon Ball sequel series, Dragon Ball GT, was still canon. Obviously, there would be some plot holes if GT was just the future Super was leading into, but in one case, the timeline definitely checks out–and it’s all thanks to one fallen hero.

In Dragon Ball Z’s Cell Saga, the Z-Fighters faced the greatest threat the Earth had ever seen: Cell. While the heroes were able to eventually defeat him, their victory came at the price of not only Goku’s life, but also that of King Kai. When the villain was on the verge of defeat following Cell's battle with SSJ2 Gohan, he decided to self-detonate–an explosion that would have destroyed the entire world.

Dragon Ball GT takes place roughly fifteen years after the main events of Dragon Ball Z .

While many fans will still argue that Super effectively retconned GT, thereby eliminating GT from the established canon of the main series, one official Dragon Ball timeline seems to indicate that they are, in fact, two series that exist within one continuity–and the death of King Kai only strengthens the argument that Dragon Ball GT is canon to Dragon Ball Super.
