A man has made an incredible discovery on a beach in South Carolina after he found a prehistoric fossil tooth.Kyle Finley, a regular visitor to Edisto Beach, South Carolina, stumbled upon a rare American mastodon tooth fossil during a casual evening stroll. 'I was walking along the shoreline watching the sunset, not really looking for fossils or anything,' Finley told Newsweek.'At one point, I happened to look down and I saw the six spikes poking out of the sand.
The American mastodon is a distant cousin of mammoths and elephants. The creature roamed North America during the late Miocene through late Pleistocene epochs, becoming extinct around 10,000 years ago.American mastodons were slightly shorter and stockier than mammoths, with females standing at around 7 feet tall and males up to 10 feet tall.
