Fort Lauderdale residents were still dealing with flooding issues Friday.
Residents in Fort Lauderdale's Edgewater neighborhood were assessing the damage from historic flooding on Friday.Trantalis said the city had 14 pump trucks on the ground initially, but they were primarily focused on moving water from around Florida Power & Light installations, to prevent widespread electricity outages.
At Fort Lauderdale's Flamingo Park neighborhood, residents were still wading through knee-deep water. Trantalis said first responders were still handling calls for help. He said they received around 250 Thursday night and into Friday, to go along with around 900 calls that had been previously received.
Gollan said two firefighters who were part of rescue efforts had been shocked by an electrical wire while wading through water. Both were hospitalized but later released. An emergency shelter at Holiday Park being jointly run by the city and the Red Cross was housing around 40 people and their pets Friday, with room to accommodate more, Trantalis said.Three water breaks did occur, though there have been no sewer breaks and the city's drinking water is safe and free from contamination, Trantalis said.
