Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is set to announce that Lt. Gov. Jon Husted will be appointed to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by former Senator J.D. Vance . Husted will serve at least through a 2026 special election to fill the remaining two years of Vance's term. Sources, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations, said DeWine will make the announcement at a 1 p.m. Friday news conference at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.
A spokesperson for DeWine declined to comment on the news conference's agenda. A Husted spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment. This decision follows Vance's resignation and a meeting DeWine and Husted had last month with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Two sources briefed on the meeting told NBC News that Husted's interest in succeeding DeWine as governor in 2026 and the possibility of Husted receiving an endorsement from Trump were discussed. However, these sources said Trump made no commitments to Husted regarding either the Senate vacancy or the gubernatorial race.Husted initially agreed to lead the new Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency but recently signaled a change of heart and met with DeWine about the appointment. Other potential candidates to fill Vance's seat included former state GOP chair Jane Timken, state Treasurer Robert Sprague, Rep. Mike Carey, and former state Rep. Jay Edwards. Trump holds significant political influence in Ohio, where he has won three times by comfortable margins. He and DeWine found themselves on opposing sides during last year's GOP primary for the state's other Senate seat, a race in which DeWine supported a state lawmaker disliked by many in Trump's circle while Trump backed businessman Bernie Moreno. DeWine and Husted have been political allies since their successful run together in 2018.
