DeWine acknowledged that the Republican's slim majority in the U.S. House influenced his decision, effectively eliminating Ohio's GOP congressmen from contention. Husted's appointment adds another Republican voice to the Senate, joining Senator Bernie Moreno, who was recently sworn in after defeating three-term Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown. While Husted had submitted paperwork to run for governor in 2026 and was actively fundraising for that campaign, his candidacy for the Senate seat was anticipated from the outset.
