Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is proposing new tax cuts for parents, he announced Tuesday while rolling out his new two-year state budget plan.

DeWine said he wants to adopt a new state income-tax deduction worth $2,500 per child and eliminate the state sales tax for “critical infant supplies,” including diapers, wipes, cribs, car seats, strollers and safety equipment. The sales tax is one of the main sources of funding for the state government, bringing in about one-third of the $18.8 billion in annual revenue, according to the Ohio Office of Budget and Management.

Speaking with reporters afterward, Senate President Matt Huffman, an influential Lima Republican, described the tax provisions as incentives for people to start and grow their families. He raised concerns about falling birthrates in other countries like Japan, which is something he said is starting to show up in the United States in the form of recent workers in the service industry.

Another change, backed by state Treasurer Robert Sprague, a Republican, would create tax-advantaged savings accounts for families to save for down payments and “other qualified housing expenses.”
