Mike DeWine has issued an executive order outlawing nine new synthetic opioids that state officials say can be more potent than fentanyl., issued Tuesday, applies to a group of drugs called nitazenes.
Nitazenes have emerged this decade as a source of overdoses. State health data recorded three nitazene-related deaths in 2020, with the number growing to 77 in 2023 – a year for which complete data is not yet available. They sometimes are combined with other illicit drugs, including other types of opioids., the latest full year for which data are available.
