The thrill of catching the biggest fish of your life is one of the many great perks of enjoying the outdoors in Utah.

Carson and Hudson Nelsen know all about Utah’s amazing outdoor opportunities. When they're not fishing out at Farmington Pond, they're hiking, boating, and more.

“Always got to stay prepared in the wild,” Hudson said. That means lifejackets on the water or enough supplies while hiking. But before you make those weekend plans, there is one thing to remember.

'It's not summer yet,” said Captain Chase Pili with the Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement.

'We still have a lot of cold water bodies,” he said. “Our lakes are still sitting around a 44-degree water temperature.' He said they don't want to see people risk getting hypothermic and getting in trouble. He also warned about weather changing within seconds or minutes while in the wilderness.

'We had one July 24th holiday a number of years ago where we had 14 different call-outs,” said Spencer Cannon, a retired sergeant with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.

He said a lot of call-outs at once can be taxing for the volunteers, both physically and emotionally. 'Planning going out like this can do so much to prevent these kinds of challenging circumstances,” Cannon said.

Cannon said don't be afraid to postpone your plans if the weather isn't cooperating.
