The fire sparked just before 4:30 p.m. near Oceanside Boulevard and Rancho del Oro Drive, near the SoCal Sports Complex. By 5:15 p.m., the fire's spread was halted, according to the citizen fire-reporting app,The blaze grew to about 10-15 acres and, at its peak, was threatening structures with a critical rate of spread, the app reported.

Some verbal evacuation warnings were made, the app reported, and the Genasys alerting system warned a senior center and the nearby Frontwave Arena to shelter in place.

"Community members are asked to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel and equipment to access the scene," an alert said. "Individuals in those areas should remain indoors, close windows and doors, and follow instructions from public safety officials. " Video from SkyRanger 7 showed a charred dry brush field with firefighters working toward containment. A white plume of smoke was visible around 5 p.m., indicating little fuel was burning.

The smoke dwindled within the next 10 minutes, while crews remained on scene to temper hot spots. Some road closures were in place for responding crews. It was not clear how long the closures would be in effect. The fire erupted amid mild winds in the 10-15 mph range, according to NBC 7 Meteorologist Greg Bledsoe, which likely aided firefighting efforts to make good progress to contain the blaze.
