The water temperature, comparable to that found in a hot tub, already is threatening coral reefs in the Florida Keys.

Scientists have seen devastating effects from prolonged hot water surrounding Florida — coral bleaching and some death. A bouy in Manatee Bay recorded a water temperature Monday of 101.1 degrees.
A buoy near Johnson Key, southwest of Manatee Bay, topped out at 98.4 degrees. The temperature hovered at or above 98 degrees for several hours during the evening.
