An Oakland police sergeant shot a man who then hid in a nearby home before surrendering after a standoff early Saturday, authorities said. It all started around 5:09 a.m. when the sergeant heard gunfire and saw a man armed with a gun in the 6300 block of MacArthur Boulevard in East Oakland, according to the Oakland Police Officer’s Association. In a bulletin to police union members, the president of the union said the sergeant confronted and then chased the suspect on foot.

The sergeant then shot the man, according to union president Sgt. Huy Nguyen. The wounded man then ran into a nearby apartment building and barricaded himself before eventually giving up, the OPOA said. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known; a police department spokesperson did not respond to a request for information.Nguyen, in his note to fellow officers, said the city has already experienced a “troubling” number of shootings and homicides so far in 2025. “This underscores the challenging and often dangerous environment our officers navigate every day as they work tirelessly to protect our city,” Nguyen wrote
