OAKLAND — At a City Hall press conference Wednesday, business improvement district and neighborhood representatives offered support for a pair of initiatives by outgoing Mayor Libby Schaaf intended to spur in-person seasonal shopping.
Schaaf said a special City Council session called for 6 p.m. next Tuesday would allow for grants to specific commercial districts, based on safety perspectives garnered from listening sessions, to pay for “ambassador” staff, security cameras, physical safety improvements and rapid window repairs. Funding for Welcome Back Downtown, described as a three-month pilot project, would total $464,000 and draw from “surplus or salary savings primarily within our police department,” the mayor said, “so this is not requiring us to cut any existing services.”
