NYC should expect sunny skies and temps in the 80s this week, National Weather Service says

As the year inches its way closer to summer, New Yorkers can expect the weather to get a little warmer at the beginning of this week – though an unfriendly cold front might make a sudden appearance.

Those living across the eastern boroughs and western Long Island can expect the week to begin with temperatures rising to the high 70s on Monday, said Bill Goodman, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in New York City. And Central Park is expected to shoot up to the low 80s on that same day, he said.

But that doesn’t mean that the cold days are over with. A cold front is expected to hit later in the week, which means that the weather should shoot down to the low 60s on Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to once again hover around the 70s at the end of the week, which is a good sign for those expecting a sunny weekend.

“This is actually pretty typical spring weather that we’re having, where you can have a warm day and then a backdoor cold front comes down from New England and puts us on the cooler side,” Goodman said. More typical summer weather is still a few weeks away, but the climate prediction center outlook for June, July and August does have a likelihood of “warmer than normal temperatures” – suggesting it’ll be an especially sweltering sweater, Goodman said.Giulia Heyward is a reporter on the People and Power desk who covers politics and breaking news. She previously worked at NPR, as a breaking news reporter, and the New York Times, as a reporting fellow on the national desk.
