A 75-year-old employee of the New York City Department of Education was arrested for allegedly assaulting a 14-year-old student at the Brooklyn Transition Center, a specialized school for students with autism and learning disabilities.

A New York City Department of Education employee was arrested while on duty Monday for alleged assault, authorities confirmed to The National News Desk (TNND). Luis Benalcazar, 75, was arrested shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday in Brooklyn, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) said. He was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor. The 75-year-old is accused of shoving a 14-year-old student while working at the Brooklyn Transition Center,to the New York Post.

The specialized school assists students with autism and other learning disabilities. An individual with the name Luis Benalcazar is listed as an employee on the school's website, a review by TNND found. Jenna Lye, deputy press secretary for the New York City Department of Education, told TNND in a statement the employee may lose his job if convicted of the offense. “This alleged behavior is completely unacceptable,” Lye wrote. “This employee has been suspended pending the outcome of the arrest, and if convicted, we will pursue their termination. There is nothing more important than the safety and well-being of our students.” The Brooklyn Transition Center did not respond to a request for comment from TNND about the incident
