A new bill passed by the City Council will test contraceptive rat bait uptown.

Animal rights activists said the new strategy would also reduce harm to children, pets and other animals.. But advocates say this time will be different due to a new, delicious formula, as well as the city’s efforts to containerize more garbage and eliminate food sources for rats.
Kaylee Byers, an assistant professor in the faculty of health sciences at Simon Fraser University who was recently in New York City for Mayor Eric Adams’ inaugural“You know, in a city like New York, where there's food everywhere," Byers said. "They might choose to eat those other food sources instead of the bait.”
“It's absolutely ridiculous,” said Romeo, adding that he tries to avoid poison, except along the perimeter of the building. He said he prefers a “bait-and-cage” method.
