EXCLUSIVE: Davina McCall is shocked that more than 60 years after the pill was invented, women are still enduring a litany of side effects if they don’t want to fall pregnant
Davina McCall sparked a healthcare revolution when she investigated the menopause and empowered a generation of overlooked women.
Davina was just 15 when she decided to take charge of her own body and secretly obtained the contraceptive pill against the wishes of her father. When Davina began to investigate the side effects of the pill, she found that very little research has actually been done. Davina struggled to find the right contraception for her until she tried the Mirena coil - a T-shaped plastic frame that’s placed in the womb and releases a hormone called progestin. The Mirena coil was a game changer for Davina - and she still uses one now to supplement her HRT.
The coil isn’t a perfect solution for everyone, and many women worry about the process of having one fitted. To demystify the insertion process Davina has filmed herself having her coil changed for her new Channel 4 documentary Davina McCall’s Pill Revolution. “I was pretty sure I’d have a positive experience, because I’ve never had a negative one,” smiles Davina.
Long waiting lists for coils, coupled with side effects from the pill could be contributing to unwanted pregnancies. One new method of contraception on the rise is the use of fertility apps where women log their periods and take their temperature to work out if they are fertile or not. But Davina found some women had still fallen pregnant due to the complexity of the apps and their methods.
"But for other women, that could have really drastic consequences. So there are lots of glamorous adverts on social media about these methods, but women should check the small print to ensure they are using the apps correctly and ultimately picking the right contraception for them.”
