Not enough warning signs' and 'disgusting smell' as oblivious swimmers cool off in Blackpool sea following sewage leak
As the sun beat down on Blackpool seafront this morning, it looked like another glorious - and normal - day on the Fylde coast.
Untreated sewage, mixed with rainwater, was then 'released into the sea'. United Utilities is carrying out urgent repair work.A 'no swim' warning was issued for eight locations on the Fylde coast - including the whole of Blackpool seafront. Yet hordes of people - including young children and dogs - were seen appearing to ignore the advice, happily paddling and in the sea at the Central and North beaches at the seaside resort.
The trader also confirmed business had not really been affected, with business quieter due to term time, despite the hot weather. It is understood the holidaymaker also added that they would not be going for a swim due to the stench. "I went in to the water to retrieve a deckchair yesterday and it felt warm and didn't look great at all. I wouldn't usually go in - it has only got a 'sufficient' bathing rating anyway, before this [sewage leak]."
