Dozens of new solar street lights are going up in some of the most crime-affected neighborhoods in Northeast Bexar County .

Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert helped get the lighting program into the county budget in hopes of lowering crime and reducing traffic crashes while saving energy at the same time. It comes with a price tag of roughly $220,000 and is paid for with a Community Development Block Grant. Calvert says hundreds of thousands of people who live in unincorporated Bexar County have been left in the dark because until now, the county has never negotiated agreements with CPS Energy for street lights anywhere in Bexar County.

Since these are solar street lights, Calvert argues this will also save neighborhood associations and the county from having to pay a CPS Energy bill for the lights.
