North Texas is preparing for a significant winter storm expected later this week. While Tuesday is forecast to be partly sunny with highs in the late 30s, temperatures will plummet into the 20s Tuesday night, and a rain-snow mix is anticipated starting Wednesday. This weather event has prompted Gov. Greg Abbott to activate state emergency response resources and Dallas city officials to hold a news conference to address the city's readiness.

As bone-chilling, winter air arrived Monday in North Texas , the update forecasts from the National Weather Service indicated that Tuesday will be sunny before weather conditions start to deteriorate later this week.

A TxDOT sign warns drivers of work crews conducting ice prevention operations along Woodall Rogers Freeway in downtown Dallas, Monday, Jan. 6, 2025. A winter storm will likely bring a rain-snow mix to North Texas as early as Wednesday.“The State of Texas is working around-the-clock to ensure Texans have the resources and support needed as severe winter weather impacts communities across Texas,” Abbott said in a news release.

The watch, scheduled to last through Friday, was issued “due to forecasted cold weather across the ERCOT region, higher electrical demand, and the potential for lower reserves.”
