“The prospect for resolving the nuclear issue will be much gloomier” without a U.S. pivot, a North Korean foreign ministry official said.
North Korea has issued a new threat to U.S. negotiators, warning that Washington will face a fierce reaction if the Americans do not adjust their strategy for sanctions relief and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
An anonymous foreign ministry official said: “We hereby make it clear once again that the United States would not be able to move us even an inch with the device it is now weighing in its mind, and the further its mistrust and hostile acts towards the [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] grow, the fiercer our reaction will be.”
The most recent summit, in Hanoi, collapsed as the two sides were too far apart on the timetable for sanctions relief in exchange for North Korean nuclear disarmament. According to Reuters, Trump demanded that Kim surrender all nuclear weapons and fuel before any sanctions were lifted, resulting in an early end to the talks.
Reuters noted that Kim has set a deadline of the end of 2019 for the U.S. to change its approach to negotiations, though the White House has dismissed his demand.
