A North Carolina school board voted against a proposal to require schools to display the U.S. Constitution, the Ten Commandments, and the Bill of Rights, citing legal concerns.

A North Carolina school board rejected a proposal Monday night that would have required the U.S. Constitution , among other documents, be displayed in its schools.

"Based on legal guidance that we got tonight, it pretty much said that the Supreme Court says you can't do it," board member Doug Knight said. "And I'm pretty sure if this passed ... we'd probably have a federal - and we've already gotten emails, I just got an email earlier from a national organization saying they would - yeah, we'd probably hear from them."

Some community members spoke in support of the display after the board rejected it. One parent shot down opposition to including the Ten Commandments, arguing the U.S. was "founded" on Christianity.
