The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is urging people in Western North Carolina to stay off the roads as Hurricane Helene makes its way through the area.

Helene made landfall on Thursday night in Florida and quickly made its way up through Georgia and into South Carolina and North Carolina , claiming at least three lives.

Lt. Josh Dowdle with the Highway Patrol said crews have been busy throughout the night and all morning long, responding to numerous calls. He said one of the biggest issues for crews is not only the rain but the high winds.
