Tue, March 12th 2024 at 7:22 PMThe nonprofit, Gaudenzia, is expanding their family alternatives program to Dauphin County. The program aims to help parents struggling with substance abuse. Heather Brown is one of hundreds of parents that have gone through the program's Lancaster County division. Brown's addiction to opioids dates back to nearly a decade ago.

"In the beginning I didn't really take them. Then I went back and he gave me another prescription. They were just piling up," said Brown. After having dental work, Brown says she initially relied on over-the-counter meds to ease the pain but over time the pain in her tooth worsened. She says opioids were her only relief. Her story is similar to thousands more in Pennsylvania. The Attorney General's Office said an average of fourteen Pennsylvanians die every day from an overdose. After spending time behind bars, Brown decided to get help for her and her kids.Brown then went through the Gaudenzia family alternatives program.
