The ‘wounded’ Mustangs fell 75-63 to Washington State on Sunday, SMU’s first loss in Moody Coliseum all season.
While SMU coach Tim Jankovich was impressed with the fight his team showed in almost stringing together a massive comeback, his focus was onone week removed from NCAA Selection Sunday, when his Mustangs found themselves on the wrong side of the tournament bubble. SMU fell in a big hole early as Washington State raced out to a 21-9 lead and took a 39-20 lead into halftime. In the first period, the Mustangs shot 32% from the floor, 14.3% from the 3-point line and attempted just four free throws. The Mustangs were outrebounded 28-11 in the first half.
“How many times have we seen this team fight and scratch around and just do whatever it takes?” Jankovich said.finished with a game-high 30 points on 9-of-18 shooting and 10-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line.
