David Mundee ASHFORD – After 20 wins in the first four weeks of the season, the Geneva Panthers’ volleyball team wants to avoid complacency.
People are also reading… Geneva improved to 4-0 in area, moving closer to the goal of clinching the regular season area title and earning the right to host the area postseason tournament next month. The Panthers host Ashford next Thursday and Dale County the following week in their remaining area games.
“We know we are right there with them, so next week when we go there, we will have a game plan,” Helms said.“I tell the girls all the time when we play those close matches that the things we give up – the unearned points off errors – is what we have to clean up, especially like every missed serve, which they didn’t have to do a thing for,” Helms said of her team, which had 10 service errors during the match.
“She is doing a fantastic job,” Helms said. “She is not only an amazing hitter but a great leader. We have a new setter to the varsity this year as a 10th grader and Amiyah has done an amazing job as a mentor for her. You can’t beat the kills, but you definitely can’t beat that captain on the court.”Ella Helms, the team’s libero, earned 37 digs and three assists and AB Morris, the setter, delivered 31 assists and had seven digs.
Geneva seized a 4-0 lead in the second set and maintained control, eventually extending the margin to as much as 10 before the Jackets made a run. Trailing 19-10, Ashford went on 8-1 run to close the gap to two points at 20-18. Two kills by Lewis and one by Fields sparked the Jackets’ surge.
