“The Unknowing” showcases Junestar’s raspy, funk-laden vocals and Dontique’s beats, with song titles that communicate the album’s sense of urgency and purpose: “Today,” “The World,” “Persistent,” “On God,” “War” and “Nation.”
“We talk about some tough issues, some of the things that I know everybody is going through,” Junestar said. “That’s why I called it ‘The Unknowing,’ because, you know, after ‘The Reset,’ you have a place where we don’t know what’s going to happen. And sometimes it’s all right to say that, or to know that you’re in that place. That was my approach with this record.”
“I had this photo, that’s me and my mom on the cover,” Junestar said. “One of the themes is technology and how we look at social media, and on the cover, she’s looking at Jet magazine, and that was her social media back then. So we put a little mark on it over her eyes just to try and make it more intriguing. I’m sure there was a lot of unknowing in her time, stuff she didn’t know about, so I tried to bring that all home. I’m happy with how it all came out.
Despite “On God’s” title, the lyrics deal not with God but what mankind must do to carry out God’s plan here on earth: “Even when you wait too long/ to weave the seeds we’ve sown/ from all the hard work that we’ve done/ to the children of the son/ gotta crawl before you run/ focus on your mission/ and what you will be done.”
“You gotta calm down, you gotta know your team’s gonna win,” Junestar entreats his sister, who’s worried they’re behind. “OK,” she relents. “I’m gonna change my attitude.”
