NIH cancer chief to serve as acting FDA commissioner

The head of the National Cancer Institute will temporarily take charge of the FDA next month after the departure of its current chief.

"Dr. Ned Sharpless is a strong public health champion who has supported the Food and Drug Administration’s push to tighten tobacco and e-cigarette regulations," Robin Korval, chief executive of Truth Initiative, said in a statement."He understands the devastating health consequences caused by tobacco, which remains the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.

Gottlieb said he wants to spend more time with his family after commuting weekly to Washington from his home in Connecticut.
