Nurses are also due to strike on Monday 6 February – meaning increased mass disruption can be expected across the NHS in England and Wales on that day. Royal College of Nursing members will also strike on Tuesday 7 February. In addition, workers at West Midlands ambulance service will strike on January 23 and GMB members at North West Ambulance Service will strike on January 24. The industrial action is expected to follow previous strikes with health unions likely to only guarantee 999 Category 1 callouts, for life-threatening situations.
Waiting times for “urgent” cases – for conditions such as late stages of labour, non-severe burns, and diabetic attacks – also reached record highs in December. The average response time for Category 3 ambulance calls was 4 hours and 18 minutes, while 8,700 patients with such conditions waited more than 11 hours.
