American 18-year-old Gauff takes down Andreescu in three sets to reach quarterfinal match with Swiatek, winner of three Grand Slam titles

PerezInstead the 18-year old rising star closed out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory by taking the last five games - with two breaks of Andreescu’s serve - to advance to the quarterfinals of the WTA San Diego Open where she will face world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
She was at her best when it mattered most, winning eight of the final 10 match points to close out the 2019 U.S. Open champion Andreescu. The 22-year old Swiatek, who was supported by a cluster of fans waving flags representing her native Poland, leads the tour with 61 wins this season to go along with seven titles, including major championship wins at the French and U.S. Opens.
“Obviously, she’s playing great,” Gauff said. “Iga’s a champ. We’ll see if I’ve improved since the last one.”With her victory over San Diego’s CoCo Vandeweghe Tuesday night, world No. 6 Jessica Pegula joined Swiatek and No. 2 Ons Jabeur, who did not come to San Diego, in earning a coveted entry in the season-ending eight player WTA singles finals in Fort Worth starting Oct. 31.
