In a phone call with his G7 counterparts, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warns Iran and the Hezbollah could retaliate for the deaths of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh and senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr.

According to the readout, Blinken emphasised the"urgent need for de-escalation in the Middle East" and ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and prisoner exchange deal. The calls came as tensions are running high in the Middle East after Iran vowed"severe punishment" against Israel for the assassination last Wednesday of Haniyeh at his residence in the Iranian capital Tehran.
