The police officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries
A Newark police officer was struck by a car early Saturday morning as he approached suspects in the act of stealing a GPS device from a vehicle, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said.
The unidentified officer was transported to University Hospital in Newark for treatment of non-life-threatening-injuries, according to Fragé's statement. On foot, the officer approached four men around Goldsmith Avenue and Hobson Street at 3:45 a.m. They appeared to be “stripping the GPS” from a stolen Ranger Rover. The suspects fled in a BMW SUV and struck the officer, Fragé's statement said.
The incident remains under investigation. The department declined to release additional information Friday night.
