A special task force in Anchorage is targeting Covid-19 relief fraud said to run in the millions of dollars.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A recent report from the Small Business Administration found that hundreds of billions of dollars from coronavirus relief programs may have been subject to fraud.

Now, a Covid-19 Fraud Task Force in Alaska made up of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, FBI, IRS, the Small Business Administration and U.S. Department of Treasury is tasked with investigating and prosecuting individuals who swindled money away from relief programs. “Those agencies have been investigating Covid-19 fraud since the very beginning and that has recently been formalized and all of the agencies are working together because different agencies gave out different money,” Tucker said.

In one case, an Anchorage woman is accused of fraudulently obtaining and laundering roughly $1 million in relief funds. In a release, the Department of Justice said she used the money to “facilitate purchasing a new home and pay employees of a marijuana dispensary.”
