Two dozen new roads are being cancelled or delayed in Wales to discourage driving and reduce carbon emissions, the Welsh Government has announced
Two dozen new roads are being cancelled or delayed in Wales in order to discourage driving andThe minister responsible warned that building new roads would only lead to more traffic and suggested that a system of road pricing could be introduced in future toThe move to scrap nine planned projects and mothball 15 more could increase pressure on the UK Government to follow suit for England, although it is understood this is currently unlikely.
Mr Waters said he wanted to reduce total mileage driven by 10 per cent and insisted that slowing the pace of building was the only way to stop an increase in driving. “If you create extra capacity, you will generate further demand,” he added. “We have locked ourselves in to a cycle of repeating the same mistakes over the last 70 years.
The Welsh Government said it would only invest in road developments which help reduce carbon emissions, “support a shift to public transport, walking and cycling” and help adapt to climate change. It added: “In developing schemes, the focus should be on minimising carbon emissions, not increasing road capacity, not increasing emissions through higher vehicle speeds and not adversely affecting ecologically valuable sites.
