The proposed development of a popular recreation area in Washington County is stirring controversy, as conservations and local official clash over how to balance economic growth, affordable housing and land preservation.
Environmental advocates, including Conserve Southwest Utah, are supporting the BLM’s decision to avoid the original route, citing long-standing concerns about impacts on the desert reserve’s ecosystems. The Utah delegation of politicians collectively released statements expressing their disapproval of the BLM’s intent to block the Northern Corridor Highway. This includes Senators Mitt Romney and Mike Lee and Reps. Celeste Maloy, Burgess Owens, John Curtis and Blake Moore.“I am exasperated that the Biden Administration refuses to support the preferred alternative route identified by local leaders and UDOT.
Snow Canada, in response to the notion that the alternative route doesn’t protect the Mojave desert tortoise habitat said, “We’ve seen Washington County continue to push for the Norther Corridor highway, but it’s been rejected repeatedly over half a dozen times by agency scientists who have said that it would be biologically devastating to the desert tortoise.”
