A new microtransit service called 'Ride the Rio' is coming to New Braunfels, offering flexible and accessible transportation options for residents. The on-demand service will operate daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and provide pick-up and drop-off at designated stops, curbside, or even door-to-door.

A new microtransit service, named 'Ride the Rio,' is set to launch in New Braunfels next year, offering a more flexible and accessible transportation option for the growing population. The service, which will run from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, will feature on-demand vans available for pick-up and drop-off at designated stops, curbside, or even door-to-door, depending on user preferences.

' is a form of on-demand, vehicle-for-hire service,' said Gary Ford, director of the city's Department of Transportation and Capital Improvements. Discussions about the service have been underway since 2023, when the New Braunfels City Council approved a hybrid transit plan designed to address the limited transportation options currently available. The plan aims to offer a scalable, efficient solution for the city's residents. 'We're crafting the request for proposals (RFP) to ensure that the service provider has the resources to meet demand as it grows,' Ford added. 'The key is scalability — we need to be able to adjust the number of vehicles as needed.' The city's Urban Transit District unveiled the 'Ride the Rio' service in June. The program will be accessible via a new mobile app, enhancing ease of use for riders. The exact launch date remains unclear. Officials said the service is expected to begin in early 2025. The city declined to provide further details when contacted for comment. 'This service will offer various levels of service, from designated stops to curbside or door-to-door, based on rider needs,' Ford said. As the city prepares for the service's rollout, discussions about managing resource needs and scaling the service to meet demand are ongoing
