McKinney is building a new City Hall municipal complex in the city's downtown. Most of the project is likely to be completed in October 2024.
The project is part of a larger district that will eventually develop around the new City Hall with a parking garage and opportunities to live, work and play.Creating a space for people to gather was key. The building’s surrounding plaza will include a covered pavilion space, food truck areas, water features and activity lawns.
The building will be flooded with natural light, and open concept work spaces will create a collaborative environment that can be utilized and adjusted as needed for the next 50-100 years to fit the needs of those using the space, Shelton said. “A lot of that infrastructure has been in the ground for 100 years so this will also make that district developable again,” Shelton said.
The inside of the city hall will pay homage to both the site’s and city’s history with about 20 walls that will be covered with vinyl featuring historic photos of McKinney. And, an open-air walk through space on the ground floor will display a historic exhibit for people to learn about the area 100-150 years ago, Shelton said. The city plans to rotate through exhibits to showcase different stories. For example, an exhibit may focus on the history of the surrounding neighborhoods, the history of downtown or what the flour mill used to look like when it was functioning.
