Housed in a 141-year-old building, the new center celebrates its grand opening Sept. 30.

It’s partly an incubator, offering free and subsidized space for artists and entrepreneurs, especially those of color. It’s also home to the mental health group Foundation 45, the online station Deep Ellum Radio and two nonprofits that helped launch the center: the Deep Ellum Foundation and Deep Ellum Community Association.

“Dallas was not a world that welcomed the mixing of cultures, especially after Reconstruction and the Jim Crow laws. But if you didn’t have much, Deep Ellum was a place where you stood a chance whether you were Black or white or Jewish or Italian or Mexican.”On a recent weekday afternoon at the center, the clamor of construction blended with the voices of staffers who were discussing which brick walls should hold which historic photos of various musicians and street scenes.

Starting Sept. 30, Brakefield will lead free hourlong Deep Ellum history tours every Saturday, beginning at the center. He says he hopes to “give people a sense of what the area was like both in its heyday a century ago and its subsequent declines and revivals.” “In order to move beyond the difficult areas of history, we need to understand the past and come to terms with it,” Govenar says., an outdoor installation directly west of the community center, where Elm Street is shaded by the I-345/Central Expressway overpass, which cuts off Deep Ellum from downtown.A century ago, this was the heart of the district.

Yet the community center also stands within spitting distance of a bona fide success story: the historic Knights of Pythias Temple.
