The Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas, a San Antonio-based nonprofit, plans to open the new facility by the end of May.

This past June, she help organize “New Braunfels to Uvalde,” a fundraising event featuring music, auctions and a barbecue plate sale.Simmonds said she hoped to raise between $30,000 and $40,000, but the event far exceeded that goal, generating about $106,000.

The nonprofit had set up a temporary center in Uvalde after the shootings to engage with the grieving community. Simmonds decided to donate the remaining $52,000 from the New Braunfels fundraiser to help establish a permanent counseling facility in Uvalde. The center's goal is to help children and their caregivers understand the depth of their grief, stabilize and preserve family relationships and develop coping skills after the death of a loved one.

Three of the center's five permanent staffers are counselors, Sokol said, and it's looking to hire two more. The center costs about $700,000 a year to run and is currently engaged with about 100 children and family members, Sokol said. “Death is not something that is in the arena of what a child should have to worry about. So for them, it's a whole new language and a lot of new feelings,” Sokol said. “It's not just the sorrow and anxiety about the past, but it's fear of the future.”
