New Berlin Brewing Co. is tucked in a strip mall in North Canton and is embracing being a pub for its surrounding area. Here’s what it’s about.
Marc Bona, cleveland.com, which Leckie-Ewing and his family operate in North Canton, is a bear. The idea came from their German exchange-school daughter.
The brewery recently passed its two-year anniversary in October - not bad for a guy who simply wants to offer good beers and have fun. Like many businesses and hobbies, the project was born out of the Covid pandemic. It boasts a 12-seat bar, a dozen four-tops and one communal table. Tables and bar top are from an ash tree killed by the ash borer in Leckie-Ewing’s yard. Keno machines dot the space, and the brewhouse is located behind the bar.“The first brewery we went to had hop lights,” he said. “I thought, ‘That’s all right, it’s a sign.’ ”
Damn the Kaiser American India Pale Ale is named after a poem by Henry Holl. Hensey’s Honeyed Ale is named for a shoemaker in town. Ernie’s Easy Rider is an homage to Ernie’s Cycle Shop. Early baseball games were played at Schick’s Meadow, now the name of a Helles Lager. And Company Haz-E refers to the unit of local soldiers serving in World War I.
Damn the Kaiser is the overall best seller, though they said new releases do well. Uncle Hoover – a winter warmer - set a record for pints sold in its first two weeks, Leckie-Ewing said. Lisa, their exchange-student daughter, would make German bar food for the family, and it became the menu’s theme - though Monday is pizza night.
