Symptoms of AOM can include ear pain, fever, irritability, and sometimes fluid drainage from the ear. AOM is often mistaken for otitis media with effusion, where fluid builds up behind the ear, a condition usually not caused by bacteria and doesn’t need antibiotics. Meanwhile, Hoberman pointed out how previous studies showed that human docs can have a wide range of success rates, from as low as 30 percent to a decent 84 percent, depending on their skills and who they’re dealing with.
