LYON, France—When the U.S. national team dispatched a pair of officials to England’s team hotel here last week, they weren’t snooping around for information about a rival. They were there to check out the luxurious digs they would move into if they advanced to the final.
Their very presence touched off a storm in a teacup. The Americans hadn’t played the semi yet and here they were with the hubris to scope out their potential breakfast room. England’s manager said it was “just not etiquette.”
