The drama was never a viable theatrical offering in terms of realistic expectations versus the amount of money requested.
Mob dramas aren't generally big box office, the vast majority of Scorsese's hits also happen to star Leonardo DiCaprio and DeNiro's biggest hits over the last 25 years have been, ironically enough, his comedies. There was talk before and after the Oscars about mandating a four-week exclusivity window for in-contention feature films, but it didn't beyond the speculative stage.
