President Biden is facing pressure from a Native Alaskan group over his administration's energy policy.
by RAY LEWIS | The National DeskA map of NPRA , President Joe Biden and VOICE President Nagruk Harcharek An indigenous Alaskan organization on Thursday denounced the Biden administration’s plans to cancel oil and gas leases in the state’s northernmost borough.a reported decision by the Department of the Interior to limit development on Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve .
DIO proposed in September restricting oil and gas development in sensitive areas while prohibiting new leases in more than 40% of NPR-A. VOICE argued industrial projects in Alaska’s northernmost borough are essential to Iñupiat communities given funds gained by the state through taxation of resource development infrastructure.
These basic services, which are commonplace throughout the Lower 48, have only arrived on the North Slope within the last generation and are directly connected to significant increases in average life expectancy over the past 50 years in our region,” Harcharek claimed. “What is more valuable than the gift of life, time with your family, time with your loved ones?”
“With climate change warming the Arctic more than twice as fast as the rest of the planet, we must do everything within our control to meet the highest standards of care to protect this fragile ecosystem,” she. “The steps we are taking today further that commitment ... to safeguard our public lands for future generations.”
