It’s hard enough traversing Mars when you’re on flat ground. It’s sandy, dusty, rocky, windy and cold. NASA ’s Perseverance rover is about to face all those conditions, but this time on a climb up to the rim of the Jezero Crater . NASA announced thethis week. The wheeled explorer will face slopes up to 23 degrees and gain 1,000 feet of elevation during the journey.

Perseverance arrived in the Jezero Crater in February 2021. It’s been exploring the site of an ancient lake and river delta inside the crater. It now has its sights set on the crater’s western rim. “Perseverance has completed four science campaigns, collected 22 rock cores and traveled over 18 unpaved miles,” said Perseverance project manager Art Thompson in a statement on August 14.

Another area of interest goes by the nickname “Witch Hazel Hill.” Witch Hazel Hill has light-toned bedrock that resembles anPerseverance recently studied and sampled. The sample from the rock named “Cheyava Falls” may contain evidence of ancient microbial life, but NASA says more study is needed to understand the rover’s findings. Scientists would be thrilled to find other rocks similar to Cheyava Falls.
