Naperville man convicted of attempted murder for stabbing his wife with kitchen knife in 2019

A Naperville man who stabbed his wife and himself during a domestic fight in 2019 was convicted this week of attempted first-degree murder in a Will County bench trial.

A Naperville man who stabbed his wife and himself during a domestic fight in 2019 was convicted this week of attempted first-degree murder following a Will County bench trial.

Patrick O’Brien, 62, went to the 2204 Popple Court home of his estranged wife on Dec. 21, 2019, to retrieve some of his personal belongings when he grabbed a large kitchen knife and chased his wife outside, stabbing her in the chest, a Will County State’s Attorney’s Office release said.“ neighbor heard the victim’s screams and threw O’Brien off the victim,” after which O’Brien stabbed himself multiple times in the torso, the release said.

In addition to attempted first degree murder, a class X felony, Circuit Judge John Connor also found O’Brien guilty of aggravated domestic battery, a class 2 felony. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 2, at which time O’Brien could be sent to prison for six to 30 years, the release said.
